For twenty years the resident scene designer at South
Coast Repertory, Cliff's work in design, graphics,
and installations now includes projects in adaptation,
direction, and alternative performance. Cliff teaches
graduate and undergraduate classes in design, collaboration,
script analysis, and gay theater, plus a special
series on the development of world theater, exploring
global rituals and performance traditions as inspirations
for new American theater.
His professional work outside of UCI has included designs
for regional theaters on the West Coast, and he also coordinated
Nexus, a collaborative play development program at South
Coast Repertory. Its commissions and workshops with artists
of diverse backgrounds and disciplines helped to increase
the company's cross-cultural awareness and led to new works
on SCR's stages. Cliff served on the board of directors
of Cornerstone Theater Company, one of the nation's leading
intercultural, community-based arts organizations, and
now is a member of its National Advisory Circle.
