With extensive design credits in virtually every medium
of the performing arts, Goheen has designed innovative and
acclaimed stage settings for a rich variety of production
venues in such diverse locations as Belgium, Colómbia,
Costa Rica, Italy, Poland, Romania, Scotland, and many American
cities, including Hollywood. Committed to a combination
of professional and academic activity for his students and
himself, Goheen’s design training program enables
a television art direction and production design connection
while encouraging interests in alternative theatre beyond,
way beyond, Hollywood.
While
comfortable with the realities of commercial/popular entertainment,
Goheen, himself, specializes in the kind of theatre that
Eugenio Barba calls, "the outlying zones of Planet
Theatre; the groups that autonomously construct a meaning
which does not recognize the boundaries assigned to our
craft by the surrounding culture." Like all mature
artist/teachers, Goheen brings a distinct aesthetic to his
graduate students. His personal preferences are for the
risky, the singular, the utterly personal. But, recognizing
that some students wish a strong connection to tradition
and commercial viability, his teaching goal is to help gifted
design students of any artistic persuasion find their own
way as artists. "We are, each, unique, biological organisms
capable of unique, artistical visions."
Goheen
has a BA in Theatre/Television from The College of William
and Mary, an MFA in scene design from the Yale School of
Drama, a Ph.D. In Dramatic Literature from the University
of Denver, memberships in USAA Local 829 (New York,) IATSE
Local 816 (Hollywood,) URTA and teaches his students how
to design for performance with a computer.
