How to Apply

Once we have received your completed online application and $105 application fee ($125.00 for international applicants), the Drama Office will contact you to schedule an audition location and time. We will begin to contact applicants for auditions beginning in November in the order in which applications were received.

Remember that the combined total length of your two contrasting audition monologues should be no more than three minutes, and that one should be classical, preferably in verse. If you wish to sing a short song (no more than 30 seconds in length), you must provide your own pre-recorded accompaniment. Please do not sing a-cappella. Be aware that you are auditioning in a group setting. This means that you will present your audition monologues with other applicants in the room. You will also engage in a variety of acting exercises, as led by the UCI faculty recruitment team. The audition process should take between 60 to 90 minutes.

If it is possible within your schedule and budget, we strongly urge you to consider auditioning at the UCI campus. This will allow you to tour the School of the Arts and meet with faculty and current MFA acting students. We will however also hold private auditions for direct applicants in New York, Chicago, and San Francisco. The dates of these private, direct UCI auditions are listed below.

Although we do not hold a formal question and answer session at the end of the audition day, the audition should allow ample time for applicants to ask any questions they may have about the Acting program or any aspect of our training programs at UCI.

Video auditions are accepted - but not encouraged - and should be submitted only by applicants for whom travel to one of the regular audition sites is completely impossible. Video submissions must be made using either DVD disc, or be easily accessible online. Return of DVDs is not guaranteed. The content of the video audition should be exactly the same as for an audition in person; please do not submit unedited show tapes. Audition recordings should be received by the Drama Department no later than February 1.

Please note that although our application process remains open until we fill all the places in our class, if your application is submitted less than two weeks prior to the audition you wish to attend, we can’t guarantee that you’ll be seen.

Acting auditions for direct applicants will be held at the following cities/dates in 2017:

  • UC Irvine: Sunday, January 15, 2017
    Irvine Application Deadline: January 1

  • New York: Monday, January 23, 2017
New York Application Deadline: January 9

  • Chicago: Sunday, January 29, 2017
    Chicago Application Deadline: January 15

  • San Francisco: Friday, February 3, 2017
San Francisco Application Deadline: January 20

*dates subject to change

Audition location will be provided at time of audition scheduling.

Final call backs will be held at UC Irvine on Saturday, February 18 & Sunday, February 19, 2017. Should you be called back, and if you are seriously interested in attending the graduate acting program at UC Irvine, please hold these dates.

In addition to our private, UCI direct applicant auditions listed above, we will also be in attendance at all of the regularly scheduled URTA auditions in New York, Chicago, and San Francicso, each year. At the URTA auditions, our acting representatives may invite candidates to apply directly to UCI at that time; however, the only certain way to receive a UCI audition invitation is to file an application before the above deadlines.
