Drama 211 - Course Overview

Year 1 - Course Topics
Fall Classicism and Neo-classicism
Aristotle, Horace, Neo-classic critics.
Lab Assignments - three scenes in classic, renaissance, and contemporary theater.
Winter

Realism/Naturalism
Stanislavsky, Antoine, Chekhov, etc.
Lab - three "realistic" scenes.

Spring

Wild Card
The Spring Quarter is always a "wild card" quarter. It may be a joint class with actors, or may focus on Shakespeare, the history of directing, or be a special academic project initiated by the student.

Year 2 - Course Topics
Fall

Romanticism
Shakespeare, Schiller, Hugo, Michael Chekhov and "Heroic Acting."
Lab - three scenes of Romantic theater.

Winter Comedy
Commedia, Bergson, Freud, Seyler, etc.
Lab - three scenes in different comic styles.
Spring Wild Card

Year 3 - Course Topics
Fall Post-modern, "high-concept" auteurism
Personal research project in contemporary style (paper required).
Lab - one long project of the director's devising.
Winter Professional Preparation
Research with the Head of Directing into the job market, defining work opportunities for fellow directors and for the student's own interests.
Lab - No assignment.
Spring Wild Card
