Production Design

A vitally important element in the UCI scene design training is actualized production design. Typically graduate scene designers design fully supported productions at least once each academic year and up to as many as 5 during there three years in the program. These closely mentored production designs are developed by way of a rigorous production planning process and in turn engineered, constructed, painted and propped by a full-time professional staff of carpenters, technical director, properties manager, scenic artist and production manager.

Student scene designers engage a large variety of practical design development experiences for the widest range of stage, budget, script, directors and performance styles. Working with graduate directors as well as nationally/internationally recognized faculty and guest stage directors, realistic contemporary budgets, highly skilled/motivated staff, beautifully equipped/maintained theatres and dramatic texts of extensive variety provides an exciting, transforming learning experience. Production design at UCI is the ultimate high-end laboratory experience-intense, rewarding, compelling and critical to preparing young designers for the theatre of tomorrow.
