Design Experiences
In
addition to the intense series of scene design concept and
craft courses, one seminar in script analysis and research,
three courses in development of theatre, two seminars in
dramatic literature, performance theory, criticism, history
of theatre, or contemporary theatre and seven graduate projects
which include three to five production scene design contacts
with working professionals is frequent and on-going.
A recent and typical series of field trips to Hollywood/LA
included several hours discussing the profession with union
production designers at a currently shooting one-camera
television production, The Agency (CBS,) a currently in-production
5-camera show, The Wayne Brady Show (ABC,) and DreamWorks
SKG. Faculty regularly supervise scene design student trips
to art museums that include the Los Angeles County Museum
of Art, Museum of Contemporary Art, Geffen Museum, UCLA
Armand Hammer Museum, The Getty Center, Huntington Library
Art Collection, Norton Simon Museum, Bowers Museum, Bergamot
Stations Arts Center, Irvine Museum, Laguna Art Museum,
Orange County Museum of Art and numerous private galleries.
Working professionals are invited to campus on a regular
basis to provide the critical foundation for discussion
focused on graduate theses production scene designs. Recent
experts included Bill Eigenbrodt (union production designer
for television, film and theatre in Los Angeles,) Jeff Hall,
principal in Jeff Hall Design (union production designer
for television, industrial shows, music videos and theatre
in Los Angeles,) and Ralph Funicello (internationally recognized
scene designer with credits at all the major American repertory
theatres.)
