Doctoral Degree Program (Ph.D.)
5 Years
Language Requirement
One
of the program’s strengths is the international character
of the faculty’s research interests. We believe such
interest is important to good theatre scholarship, as well
as providing an advantage in the job market. Because literature
is never completely translatable, and because significant
scholarship is written in many languages, and because the
study of a foreign language makes one more sensitive to
the workings of one’s own language, students are required
to demonstrate proficiency in one language other than English.
This knowledge may be demonstrated in a variety of ways:
usually by demonstrating in a seminar paper the ability
to use and understand foreign texts; or by passing a second
year of language courses with a B or better; or by some
other manner arranged with the student’s advisor.
Because foreign language knowledge is an important tool
and not just a hurdle, we hope that our students will demonstrate
a useful working knowledge of a language rather than simply
passing a university exam.
