Daniel Gary Busby has served as chair and producing artistic director of the drama department in the Claire Trevor School of Arts since 2013, bringing to UCI productions such as Ngugi wa Thiongo’s The Trial of Dedan Kimathi, Tony Kushner’s Angels in America Part I, Naomi Wallace’s The Liquid Plain, and Bruce Norris’ Clybourne Park. As a conductor, his theatrical credits span both the musical theater and operatic genres, from Stephen Schwartz’ Godspell to Igor Stravinsky’s The Rake’s Progress. He regularly conducts at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, where he has helmed productions of The Music Man, She Loves Me, and Pirates of Penzance. He was instrumental in forming a partnership between CTSA and creative incubator Academy for the New Musical Theatre (now called New Musicals, Inc). The creative alliance produced original musicals, including 2012’s Manson’s Girls for which Busby served as music director. In addition to being a member of the New Swan Shakespeare Festival’s advisory council, he also provided musical direction for its premiere musical production of The Fantasticks.  Before joining UCI as professor of musical theatre in 2003, he was the associate director of the Ray Bolger Musical Theatre Program in the School of Theater, Film and Television at UCLA. He has a bachelor’s degree in music from Chapman University and master’s and doctoral degrees in conducting from UCLA’s Herb Alpert School of Music.
