Robert Cohen was the founding chair of the UCI Drama Department from the campus's opening in 1965, serving in this position until 1990; he now holds the title of Claire Trevor Professor of Drama. He is a professional director, translator, playwright, essayist, drama critic and the author of many books on theatre including the double-volume Acting One/Acting Two (fifth edition, 2007), Acting Professionally (seventh edition, 2009), Acting Power, Acting in Shakespeare, Theatre (ninth edition, 2010), More Power To You, Creative Play Direction, Giraudoux: Three Faces of Destiny, plus two dramatic anthologies and many plays, play translations, scholarly articles, and play reviews. At UCI, he mainly teaches acting, and has conducted multi-day acting workshops in more than a dozen countries on four continents and in twenty states in the U.S. Cohen's stage productions in 2007-09 have included Endgame and Rabbit Hole at UCI, The School for Wives at the Utah Shakespearean Festival, and world premieres of Blue Shade and Eve's Rapture in Irvine, Los Angeles, Romania, Poland, and the Czech Republic. In 1999 he received the Career Achievement Award from the Association for Theatre in Higher Education and in 2009 the honorary title of Professor Honoris Causa from Babes-Bolyai University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.
