The Green Knight
During Christmastime at King Arthur’s court, in the midst of court revelry, a stranger, a giant green knight on a green horse, appears in the courtroom and issues a challenge. Honorable Gawain accepts the call, and a magical story unfolds of a beheading and a perilous winter quest through the wild world to repay the debt. Sanctuary is given by a great lord and his seductive wife, and Gawain ultimately finds his way to the Green Chapel where his life hangs in the balance. A tale of the mysteries of the seasons, and of honor and truth – told through movement, music and projection in the style of CounterBalance Theater.
Translated by the UK Poet Laureate, Simon Armitage, we adapted the story for a physical theater rendition where disembodied heads speak, the hidden animals of the forest emerge, and nature demands respect.
